I’ve Already Had an Abortion and Don’t Want Another One. What Are My Options?

You get to decide the pregnancy outcome that you want. If you know you do not want to terminate your current pregnancy, your two other choices are adoption and parenting.

Each choice can look unique to your situation, so keep reading to learn the best fit for you. At Choices Options for Women, we also offer free consultations, which allow you to sit down and learn more about each option.

Adoption

One of the advantages of adoption is that you, as the birth mother, create an adoption plan tailored to your specific circumstances.

As you consider this option, it's important to be aware of the different adoption types available:

  • Open Adoption: As the most common type of adoption in the US, it allows for an ongoing relationship between you, the child, and the adoptive family, whom you will select before the adoption takes place.
  • Semi-Open Adoption: In this arrangement, you can communicate with the child and adoptive family through the adoption agency, but no identifying information is disclosed.
  • Closed Adoption: There is no exchange of information or contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family. All identifying details are kept confidential by the court. This may be preferable if you desire the highest level of privacy.

In the state of New Jersey, pregnancy and health expenses for the birth mother can be covered during pregnancy and shortly after birth by the adoptive family.

Adoption is a brave step but also a rewarding one because it requires you to choose a family that you trust to give the best life possible for your child so you can rest easy knowing they are cared for.

Parenting

If you're open to raising the child, many women in your situation have found that to be an incredibly rewarding choice - both during the child's childhood and beyond.

Having a kid is a big responsibility, so take as much time as you need to think it through. Consider things like:

  • Am I ready to do this, even if the father is not supportive?
  • Do I have a stable home that can adequately care for a child?
  • Do I know people who can support me through this?

These are just a few example questions that can help you determine whether parenting is realistic and what accommodations you need.

If you're concerned about finances, many private and public programs support parents through pregnancy and beyond.
